Chapter Nine

Noah moaned as he awoke. His body ached from the hardness of the ground. He was grateful he was at least warm and dry. Uther looked up at him from his position half over Noah’s chest. Shuffling a little higher, Uther kissed Noah and then nuzzled against him.

Smiling, Noah draped his arm around the smaller man. “Just a couple of minutes,” he said. “My back’s protesting big time, and my bladder wants me to take a walk.”

Snickering softly, Uther eased from Noah’s side. “I check if safe.”

While Uther crawled out of the cave, Noah checked his clothing, pleased to find all of it dry, even his sneakers. Deciding to dress in a modicum of comfort, he crawled outside. Uther was partially visible as he clearly took care of his own morning ablutions.

Waving when Uther looked over, Noah pointed to another tree and went to take care of his own business. By the time he returned to the mouth of the cave, Uther was waiting for him.

“Home over there.” Uther waved vaguely in the direction he faced, which, as far as Noah could determine, was away from the lagoon. “We must take care,” he added, dropping his voice to a whisper. “Neva. I feel her. Close, but not close.” He shook his head, unable to explain any more clearly.

Hugging him tightly, Noah dropped a kiss to Uther’s nose. “You lead. I’ll follow.” The smile Uther gave him was bright and wide and made Noah’s heart soar. “Let’s get you home.”

Uther clasped tightly to Noah’s hand and strode ahead. Noah kept pace with him, but this time focused more on Uther than on the world around him. Uther cocked his head time and again, listening, or looked left, right, even behind them with an intense stare. The vigilance had Noah’s nerves on edge. He looked around, his gaze darting left, then right, as if he expected more goblins to simply crash through the foliage.

Noise to their left had Uther trying to stand protectively in front of Noah and then his stance relaxed. To Noah’s relief, Aunt Tawny and James came into view.

“Oh, man! Are you two ever a sight for sore eyes.” Noah hurried over to embrace them both.

“We’ve been trying to find you since I realized you’d come into the Fae world,” Aunt Tawny said. “But my ability to locate you kept getting blocked. Thankfully, I managed to trace you, dear.”

“Not stay. Not safe.” Uther hopped from foot to foot, looking constantly around.

“Don’t fret, Uther dear. We won’t—”

An unseen force made the leaves around them swirl and the branches wave frantically, separating Noah from his cousin and aunt. Noah stared as bark, leaves, and plants lifted from the ground and swirled around, coalescing into a vaguely human shape. In the midst of it, he saw something more substantial, something that glared back at him with glowing red eyes.

A woman stepped out from the maelstrom, as beautiful as she was menacing. Her dress was a mix of green and brown that looked like it was made from the earth and leaves she’d emerged from.
